A down-the-hole drill, commonly abbreviated as DTH, is primarily a pneumatically powered rock or ground drill in which the percussion mechanism is placed directly behind the drill bit so that it descends into the drill hole with the bit. The DTH hammer and bit receive compressed air as well as the necessary feed force and rotation from the drill pipes. Cuttings at the bottom of the hole are flushed upward by air. As the hole gets deeper, drill pipes are added to the top of the drill string.While the hammer casing directs the drill bit, the piston strikes the bit's impact surface directly. Fast hammer impact fractures hard rock into tiny fragments that are propelled into the air by the DTH hammer's air exhaust.
